Catherine

Catherine H.

From: Canada

A stimulating, nurturing, and safe environment ensures that every child has the chance to become the best they can. Within each child exists special talents, abilities and desires that make them who they are. As an educator, it is my desire to discover who each child can be and draw out of them their full potential. The origin of the word “educate” is the Latin word “educare” which in its original form has the dual meaning of “pour in” and “draw out”. I believe that as a teacher it is my privilege to pour in not only information, but care and support into a child and then like a well made tea, as the time is right, to draw out the full flavor that comes from within each unique individual.
Because the world is becoming more and more interactive between cultures, it is important that we provide each child with skills to succeed in a changing world. To this end we seek to provide a high standard of English education and appreciation of all cultures to each of the children in our care. Academic, Social, Physical, and creative skills are equally important and thus a progressive, balanced holistic curricula is something we continually strive towards.

Why teach in Japan?:
My quest for knowledge led me to completing degrees in Education and Psychology while raising my family. I believe that only through education can we move forward and that sometimes we need to take chances and move out of our comfort zones, a philosophy that led me to Japan. I am continuing study as time permits. Japan has been a kind experience as the people have been welcoming, warm, and friendly.

I worked at a pre-school for 2 years. I was teaching children between the ages of two and four. After that, I carried on working at an international school as an assistant English teacher. Through this teaching experience, I realized how much fun it is and how rewarding it is for the students. I feel privileged to be in a position where I can help children to grow. This opportunity also gives me a chance to improve my own skills, which will enable me to help the children develop even more.
